Woman on Boat Ride

Your afternoon arrival into Kona will give you time to adjust to Hawaii time zone and hopefully grace you with an amazing sunset. This evening explore the old whaling town of Kailua Kona.

Pick up your rental car at Kona Airport where you can reserve a compact to a luxury vehicle or a jeep / mustang if you are looking for a convertible

Day 2

Explore Kona

Woman on Boat Ride

Kona offers a variety of activities and historical sites to explore. Our suggestion is to visit the Kona Coffee plantations, Captain Cook Bay and Pu’uhonua Honaunau historical park (also known as the city of Refuge) Captain Cook Bay is known for great snorkeling and the monument to Captain Cook the English explorer. With beach time you can spend a full day in the area.

If you are an avid golfer, Kona offers several great courses to choose from. Let us setup either a morning or afternoon round of golf.

Day 3

Black Sand Beach

Woman on Boat Ride

A two-to-three-hour drive with a variety of interesting stops along the way at small towns and South Point, the Southernmost point in Hawaii. Driving to volcano you will pass Punalu’u black sand beach. This one of the easiest accessible black sand beaches on the Big Island where the ocean has crushed old lava flows into small particles. Punalu’u is famous for the turtle population and its freshwater springs that are just offshore. The freshwater floats above the ocean salt water.

We suggest in the afternoon you take in the orchid or anthurium farms in the volcano area or the winery at Volcano. Volcano also host the volcano golf course which we recommend for afternoon play, since you can have fog in the morning.

Day 4

Volcano National Park

Woman on Boat Ride

Spend your entire day exploring the Volcano National Park – entrance fee into the national park is currently $35.00 for each car entering the park which is open 24 hours.

Start your visit at the visitor center before moving on to explore the Jagger Museum that has old videos of past eruptions, seismograph that records earthquakes which there are several each day. View numerous craters with one being active roughly over the last 50 + years. Take a walk-through part of a lava tube known as Thurston lava tube or take in a hike through one of the many trails. The best-known trail is Kilauea Iki that you walk on top of past eruption crater. The hike on the crater floor is two and half hours.

Hawaii has many lava tubes that has been created by many different eruptions over hundreds of years, if you are into soft adventure this is a great adventure.

Day 5

Visit Hilo

Woman on Boat Ride

Relax this morning before moving on to exploring Hilo, which is the county seat of government for the Big Island. On your way to Hilo which is only 45 to one hour away from volcano take in a stop at the Macadamia Nut factory or include a exciting zipline activity on 8 separate lines crossing across ravines and rainforest canopies.

Hilo was devastated in the early 1950’s on April 1st by a tsunami that traveled from Alaska to Hawaii. The sets of waves measured as high as 40 + feet and destroyed the then shoreline community.

On the out skirt of Hilo town, you will find Rainbow falls and just above the falls a spot that is referred to as boiling pots where the water swirls when the river is running high.

Just North of Hilo you will find Akaka Falls, this is one of the tallest falls in Hawaii and is very majestic, dropping hundreds of feet to the river below.

Hilo is an old town with many building dating back 100 + years with interesting shops and local restaurants to choose from at reasonable prices.

Day 6

Waipio Valleyu

Woman on Boat Ride

Start your day by taking the four-mile scenic drive around Hilo where you can include a stop at the World Botanical Gardens for a short hike. A second waterfall as you drive up Highway 19 on the Hamakua coast is Uma Uma waterfall which has multi-levels.

This part of the Big Island was known for its sugarcane agriculture. Most of this land is now small farms.

One of the main highlights is Waipi’o Valley, which overlooks a magnificent valley. The valley is used by locals that tend farms in the valley and the view is referred to as the Valley of Kings.

Stop at Waimea town for lunch before a side journey to the town of Hawi on highway 250. Hawi is quaint town with small stores and art studios. In Hawi you will find the original Statue of King Kamehameha, which was lost in a shipwreck from France at the end of the 1890’s.

Day 7

Relax and enjoy the sunset at the resort

Woman on Boat Ride

Relax this morning and enjoy the Waikaloa resort area.

Waikaloa and surrounding areas has some of the most amazing resort golf courses on the Big Island. Take in a morning round of golf or just put your feet up and relax.

The best beach on the Big Island can be found at Hapuna with soft sand.

Drive time from Waikaloa to Kona Airport is one hour plus a few minutes.
